The finger-reading experiments — the anomaly set off by the character for "Buddha"

1. Hallucination, or a field of higher intelligence? A long-running argument

From 1996 to 1999, Prof. Si-Chen Lee, former President of National Taiwan University, spent more than three years working with the Institute for the Science of the Human Body at the China University of Geosciences on research into psi abilities. The director, Professor Shen Jin-Chuan, was a well-known geologist with a deep interest in unusual phenomena of the human body, and the assistant researcher, Sun Chu-Lin, was a woman of remarkable range with sixty different abilities at her command, every one of them hard to credit.

They argued constantly over one question. The "teachers" a subject sees through the third eye in the mind: are they a hallucination, or a connection to a "field of higher intelligence" in another dimension? These teachers are formidable. They can instruct a subject in all kinds of psi techniques, and they can tell the subject what happened in the past or what is going to happen in the future.

Most of the researchers, with Song Kong-Zhi of Institute 507 as their representative, held firmly that these "teachers" seen in the mind are hallucinations, much like dreaming: the subject enters the functional state, dream-like images appear in the brain, and none of it has anything to do with the world outside. In 1865, for example, the chemist Kekulé dreamed of a snake biting its own tail to form a ring, and so cracked the structure of the benzene molecule (six pairs of carbon and hydrogen atoms). What occupies the mind by day returns in dreams at night; knowledge can come from an inner vision that has nothing to do with the world outside.

Professor Shen Jin-Chuan, however, held firmly that another world exists, which he called the "field of higher intelligence". A subject entering the functional state can connect to that field and draw out the information they need.

The two camps argued for more than a decade, and neither could persuade the other. Each time a new phenomenon appeared, both sides declared that their own position had been supported.

2. Prof. Si-Chen Lee's finger-reading experiment — a figure of light appears

On 26 August 1999, during his finger-reading research, Prof. Si-Chen Lee met with a remarkable event. In front of more than ten physicists and psychologists from the Physical Society as witnesses (see Figure 1), Professor Chen of the Department of Physics at National Taiwan University used a single character, "Buddha", and opened the way into the world of the information field.

The experiment was already under way. With the other characters, the subject read each one correctly, and the images were static. But when the character for "Buddha" came up, what she saw instead was "a figure of light, smiling at me". Several more "Buddha" characters followed, and she saw a glowing screen, heard laughter, saw figures of light running about the laboratory, and never once saw the character "Buddha" itself. Only the anomaly.

The characters that came next, "Bodhisattva" and "Jesus", produced anomalies too: either a figure of light or a cross. Yet the moment an ordinary character was substituted, the anomaly disappeared, and the experiment could be repeated exactly.

So where did the anomaly come from, inside the brain or outside it? Did the reader's subconscious take these names to be sacred and generate a hallucination? Or are these sacred words a channel, a web address, through which the subject's third eye connects to a site or a station in the information field, and sees the world it holds?

3. The decisive evidence, and the case against hallucination

Six months later we found what looked like decisive evidence, in tests using sacred words in Tibetan and Hebrew and a sacred Islamic emblem.

Neither the experimenters nor the subject knew any of these scripts. Yet the Tibetan for "Padmasambhava" and "Mahakala" (the protector deity of the Kagyu school of tantric Buddhism), the Hebrew for "I am that I am" (God), and the Islamic name of Allah all produced anomalies in the finger-reading experiments, with every subject seeing light.

This indirectly supported the view that the anomalies were not brain-generated hallucinations arising from what the subconscious recognizes, but that a sacred word is itself a web address: whether or not you can read it, connecting to it takes you to the corresponding site. It works like the internet, where a correctly written address in a language you cannot read will still reach the site it belongs to.

Taken together, this points to the same conclusion: beyond the material world of our present four-dimensional spacetime there is also an information field, full of sites, and it is what our cultures and religions have called the "Tao", the "world of the void", the "formless realm", the "metaphysical", the "world of spirits", or "heaven and hell".

Editor's note: the research into sacred symbols that Prof. Si-Chen Lee began on this occasion led to the creation of Aqive's Qi Crystal range and Qi Box range.
