The anomaly set off by the character for Buddha in finger reading – stepping into a site in the spiritual realm

1. The argument on the mainland: hallucination, or a highly intelligent information field?

From 1996 to 1999 I spent more than three years working with the Institute of Human Body Science at the China University of Geosciences on research into exceptional functions. Its director, Professor Shen Jin-Chuan, was a well-known geologist, then just past sixty, with a deep interest in exceptional human phenomena. The assistant researcher, Sun Chu-Lin, was a person of formidable ability who commanded sixty different functions, every one of them beyond ordinary imagining and every one a challenge to modern science. Through them I went on to meet researchers at institutions from the Inner Mongolia Medical College to Yunnan University.

I found that they argued constantly over one question. The "masters" that people with exceptional abilities saw in the celestial eye of the mind — were they hallucinations? Or were they information picked up by connecting to a "highly intelligent information field" in another dimension? These masters were powerful: they could teach a person techniques for various exceptional functions, such as passing a tablet through a wall, and could tell them what had happened in the past or what was to come.

Most researchers, whose position was best represented by Song Kong-Zhi of Institute 507, were convinced that the "masters" seen in the mind were hallucinations, much like dreams: once a person enters the functional state, dream-like images appear in the brain that have nothing to do with the outside world. In 1865, for instance, the chemist Kekulé dreamed of a snake biting its own tail to form a ring, and so cracked the structure of the benzene molecule (six pairs of carbon and hydrogen atoms). What occupies you by day comes back at night; knowledge may come from an inner hallucination and have nothing to do with the world outside.

Professor Shen Jin-Chuan, however, was convinced that another world exists — what he called the "highly intelligent information field" — and that once a person enters the functional state they can connect to it and draw out whatever information they need. The two camps argued for more than a decade and neither could persuade the other. Each time a new phenomenon appeared, both sides claimed it as support for their own view.

2. A luminous figure appears in my experiments too

In Taiwan I never met anyone of Sun Chu-Lin's calibre, so my work was limited to finger reading. I neither dared to touch, nor had any way of reaching, the higher-level questions of the spiritual realm that the "masters" belonged to. Then, on 26 August 1999, before more than ten physicists and psychologists of the Physical Society as witnesses (see Figure 1), Professor Chen of the Department of Physics at National Taiwan University opened a door with a single character, "Buddha" (佛), and we stepped into the world of the information field. With other words, the subject would see the correct characters, static on the page. But with the first "Buddha", she saw "a luminous figure smiling at me". With the "Buddha" characters that followed she saw a bright screen, heard laughter, and saw a luminous figure running about the laboratory — the character itself was nowhere to be seen, only the anomaly.

"Bodhisattva" and "Jesus" then produced anomalies too: either a luminous figure or a cross. Switch to an ordinary word and the anomaly disappeared, entirely repeatably. Did such an anomaly arise inside the brain, or was it triggered from outside? Was her unconscious treating these names as sacred and generating a hallucination? Or are these sacred words a channel, a web address, letting her celestial eye connect to a site or a station in the information field and see that world?

3. The decisive evidence against hallucination

The decisive evidence came six months later, from tests with sacred words in Tibetan and Hebrew and with a sacred Islamic design. Neither the experimenters nor the subject knew any of these scripts, yet the Tibetan for "Padmasambhava" and "Mahakala" (the protector deity of the White Sect of Tantric Buddhism), the Hebrew "I am that I am" (God), and the Islamic Allah all produced anomalies in which she saw radiant light. This led us to conclude that the anomalies were not brain hallucinations arising from what the unconscious recognised, but that a sacred word is itself a web address: whether or not you know it, connect to it and it takes you to the corresponding site. It is like the internet as it works today — write a foreign word correctly and it will reach the matching site, even if the word means nothing to you. It also led us to conclude that beyond the material world of our four-dimensional spacetime there is an information field, full of sites, and that this is what our culture and our religions call the "Dao", the "world of emptiness", the "formless realm", "what is above form", the "world of spirits", or "heaven and hell".

Editor's note:

The research into sacred symbols that Prof. Si-Chen Lee began on this occasion is what led Aqive to develop the Qi Crystal series and the Qi Box series.
